Freedom Of Speech

See, people who post this kind of shit crack me up. Because no one is stopping them from saying it. We’re just telling them that violent oppressive words come with consequences. Say it all you like, just be ready for someone to respond in ways that you won’t like. Freedom of speech has never meant freedom from consequences. Also, if you’re going to be a bigot at least be smart enough not to pretend to be black while you have pictures of yourself all over the place.

because their validity expressly rides upon our invalidity. we are the nothing to their something.

if we are something too then it means they aren’t the center. their center of balance is shook. and so they act like rabid fucking animals who’ve been confronted w the fact their hoarding at the cost of others may be challenged and coming to an end.

It’s funny (not) how people can so quickly forget that Black people with natural hair styles have difficulty finding jobs and receive pressure on the job to change

whereas that does not happen to white people who try to wear braids, locs, or just frizzed out “wild” hair.

This has been proven time and time again. A major women’s magazine was called out for referring to Black women’s natural hair as “unprofessional” just a few years ago. And magazine editors are relatively liberal/progressive compared the HR/management in most companies/npo’s. A lot of us have multiple anecdotal evidence we could provide for this also.

Similar to how Muslim women (and others who follow religions that they believe mandate it) have the legal right to wear hijab but have to fight like hell to get it accepted by most companies (and often have to modify the style/color choice to make the company more willing to allow it), but white women can come into the office in “fashionable” wraps and everyone compliments them on how cool they are.

And yes, tattoos & piercings have to be covered in many jobs - but not all! And white people with ink or other mods still have a better chance of getting the job than a POC with the same ink or mods simply because your mods don’t completely negate your privilege as a white person.

When white people do these things, they are viewed as “edgy”, “artistic”, “creative”, “eccentric”, “fashionable”, “forward thinking”, “progressive”, etc. but at the end of the day they do not face SYSTEMIC discrimination for it. It sometimes makes things a little more complicated for them, but it does not actually hold them back. I know they get some shit for it but it doesn’t make or break their lives, and they have choice if they are going to do it, knowing the potential (minimal) consequences.

When POC do things that are natural to us, part of our historical/cultural/spiritual background, we are “too ethnic”, “too in your face”, “unprofessional”, “confrontational”, “ghetto”, “primitive/backwards”, “inflexible/unwilling to play the game”, etc. And it actually is used to withhold opportunities from us. We are dehumanized or pathologized for it, even if it is a tradition that is so important to our identity that we don’t really have a “choice” to not do it, even knowing that the consequences will be great.

So You Think You Are a Good Ally?

racismschool:

That is super fantastic, wonderful and dandy.

Really it is but that’s all you get. You know why?

No one should get rewarded for simply doing what is right.

I don’t like you more because I know you are one of the good ones. I expect you to be one of the good ones anyway. Doing what is right is not some sort of pass, authority or even something to be celebrated. You are doing the right thing. Doing the right thing should not be abnormal. Doing the right thing should not be something to stand up and clap for. When was the last time someone gave you a standing ovation or even a pat on the back for not running over a child with your car?

If anything, being treated as an oddity should make you weep. It should make you step back and say “How horrible is the world we live in that I am getting praise for not being a racist?

If you are looking for praise, your “Ally Status” is fake.

I appreciate you. Truly I do but that’s all I have for you. I am glad that you exist. I am glad that you are on the side of right but that is all I have for you. That is all I can give. I don’t have any actual gratitude if that is what you need. I just can’t help you with that. I can’t be grateful for/to you. I can only be happy that you exist as I am happy all good people exist.

You can’t tell a POC about their own oppression, especially if you’re never going to experience that oppression. If you’re out to do good things and save the world, I urge you to refrain from white washing the universe and pretending some institutionalized forms of oppression are not unique to certain races or social classes. Stop your bullshitting.

I don’t even know where to start with this shit. I swear if one more person tells me this, I will blow up in their face. JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE A FRIEND THAT IS ONE MEMBER OF AN UNDERPRIVILEGED GROUP, DOESN’T MEAN THAT ONE PERSON SPEAKS FOR US ALL. Also, you don’t get to reclaim certain terms for people preemptively, I don’t give a fuck who you are, so come up to me and call me the N- word and I’ll bitch your ass.
